Gerber Obsidian Knife Review

I bough two of these in the Half-Serrated version.
I have been really pleased with them --- although they haven't been tested on anything brutal.
The serrated section is fantastic for cutting rope or destroying cardboard boxes for recycle bin!!!
The fine-edge section sharpens well.
What tempted me into buying the Obsidian was the 'safety' which locks the 'blade lock pin'.
Doing one hand 'flick' opening (centrifugal force opening) [without watching/looking/eyeballing],
followed by sliding the 'safety' across, brings up a vital feature for user safety!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You CANNOT slide the safety across unless and until the blade is locked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The blade lock press pin must 'pop' out, or the safety cannot slide. The lock/release push pin
only pops out when blade is FULLY open or FULLY closed.
Thus, the vital feature allows the user to KNOW immediately that the blade is full open.
In other reviews here, they mention that the pin does its job irrespectively of whichever position the
safety is in. THIS IS TRUE!! It IS strong and so short, as to be most unlikely to activate
accidentally by user. If the user were to take the time and take the care to open the blade by its
dual sided thumb stud, one would never really need the safety to hold things in place (due to effective
locking pin). But rushed carefree flicking open occasionally allows for almost open / seemingly open
blade, and this is a nasty condition waiting to backfire or pounce on oneself. Trying to slide the
safety across without watching/looking/eyeballing informs one about the state of the blade position
accurately ---- I love it!!!!!!!!!!
As for the included tools, yes, I'd've preferred a 'can opener' to a 'bottle opener' for survival mode, whatnot.
The angle of the included tools is 'off'!!! Being fussy, I set the flat blade screwdriver bit on to a new and
straighter angle by sanding it down with a flat diamond sharpening stone. The new angle is between the
original slanted angle and true handle/shaft alignment, because if it were in line, rotational application
would make one keep missing the screw one is unscrewing. (trust me).
I found the Philips blade screwdriver bit to be rather tough to boot! It fits #2 Philips screwheads well.
But due to crazy angle of Obsidian, again, rotational application is redonkuless!!! It does not strip
screw heads, so that's one thing, I guess.
