Vredestein CX Black Panther Bicycle Tire (Black/Black, 700 X 33) Review

The Black Panther CX tire by Vredestein has a supple, high thread-count casing, a anti-puncture strip, and lots of tall, sharp knobs. They mount exceptionally easy, perhaps a little too easy if you're running tubeless, but see below. I've ridden them on pavement, grass, dirt, mud, and sand.

If you're running these with traditional tubes, you can't do much better for these tires.

However, I'm running these tubeless on Stan's Iron Cross wheels. The bead isn't very tight or rigid, so burping is an issue under 28#. Over 40#, they're pretty much guaranteed to blow off the rims (I've already done the research for you!). However, the sidewalls are so supple, I'm running these at 30# and have absolutely no grip issues.

On grass, dirt, and mud, they cling harder than my ex-girlfriend. Surprisingly, even though they have fairly tall knobs, they shed mud really well. There is a center ridge, but don't count on it against file treads. On the flats, they will feel a little slow. But in the turns, you'll be able to hang with the tubular kids and brake with confidence. I *did* trash a tire trying to take my CX bike through a really poorly-planned line in a rock garden. Other than that, I haven't really needed to test the puncture protection of these tires. However, I've yet to experience the tell-tale spray of sealant with these, so there's that.

If you're running inner tubes, these are totally 5-star. If you're tubeless, They are 4+ stars. I'll update this at the end of 'Cross season to see if they perform all year.
