RockShox MoCo RLT DNA for MY10 -Current Revel Crown LO Review
Bought this damper to upgrade my Rockshox Recon Gold fork. The damper is technically for the newer Revelation (2010-2012) and older Reba (2009-2011) but since the Recon Gold has aluminum stanchions it fits perfectly. Rockshox part # 11.4015.544.110. Great adjust-ability - you can set your floodgate and low speed compression (LSC) which effects how the fork compresses and deals with different terrain. There are 6 distinct clicks of the compression dial which will bring the damper from full open to lockout, as well as a highly adjustable floodgate control. The damper uses a port at its base to allow (or restrict) the flow of oil. When set to open it allows oil to flow more freely thus letting the fork use up its travel quite easily. As you increase compression it allows less and less oil through until the fork becomes completely locked out (no oil allowed through). If you have the compression set a few clicks in you will stiffen up the fork, at least in it's first half of travel. This is good for control as it won't be diving through its travel just from you standing on the pedals or braking.
Floodgate effects the same port but in a different way. At a certain pressure it will open up the damper port completely allowing it to "blow off" and allow alot of oil through. So for example, if your LSC is set so that the fork is locked out, and you hit a big bump the fork can still move through its travel for the hit and then immediately return to lockout. This both protects the fork and creates a better ride. Since the RLT damper has an adjustable floodgate, you can tweak your settings even further.
[If the LSC is set to open or only slightly closed the floodgate will have no effect, since the oil is allowed to flow it will never build up enough pressure to blow off. On the other end if the LSC is set to lockout but the floodgate is set to open, it won't actually lockout because it will only take a small amount of pressure to blow off.]
My setup was to set the floodgate completely open and turn the LSC dial 6 clicks in. I then dialed the floodgate in until I got a good lockout. Normally for trail riding I'll ride with the LSC 2-3 clicks in. 4 clicks in is good for smoother terrain or perhaps climbing, 5 for near lockout and 6 for a firmer lockout. The great thing about this system is it's easy to switch and go from completely different feels of the fork and is highly adjustable to suit your riding style and terrain.
