I've used DeSantis' Inner Piece IWB holsters for some time now and have found them to be quite good. They offer reasonable comfort when used with relatively bulky double-stack firearms like the compact Glock 19 or the H&K P30 (using the holster version originally designed for the Springfield XD). But there's not an equivalent version for the Sig P226/229 in the Inner Piece lineup, so during a search of DeSantis' website I happened across this model number which the company states is the appropriate version for the large framed Sig P226, which in turn means that the smaller but similarly framed P229--among others in Sig's lineup--will work as well.After doing a search here on Amazon for the model number I came up with a lone hit for the product, sold by Optics Planet, one of the Marketplace sellers that does frequent business through Amazon. After ordering it up and upon its arrival, I was somewhat disappointed by what I found. The quality of the leather left something to be desired, being thinner and more flimsier than the stout material used on my Inner Piece holsters or my DeSantis beltloop scabbard (also used with my P226 when open carrying). The extended leather isolation flap that goes between one's body and the gun was particularly distressed in appearance and feel; not exactly what I was expecting for something that's purported new.
In use the holster does work, but the thin leather walls collapses so easily that re-holstering a P226 or P229 takes even more jostling and effort than it otherwise should. I wasn't expecting Kydex-like performance, but there IS a certain level of ease that I do feel is mandatory for any IWB holster to be effective. As a result, I slightly modified this Cozy Partner by adding a small black plumbing washer as a spacer to the screw-down, which at least provides some easing up the sheathing action of the gun's trigger guard, even if the rest of the pistol is still catching itself along the remaining edge of the holster's gun opening.
For my body size this particular Cozy Partner isn't the most comfortable. The P226 is a relatively long gun and is really not well-suited for IWB concealed carry for any person close to my height, and the resultant length in this holster bears that out. Even though I intended to use this unit to carry my shorter P229, the extra length of the holster is constantly digging itself into my leg whenever I'm seated, like when I'm in the car. And this even with its otherwise too-soft leather. While as a whole it still works, but it's definitely not what I had expected.
In general I suppose I'm a bit let down by this particular DeSantis holster, particularly since I've had excellent performance out of previous holsters made by the company. I also wasn't fond of Optics Planet's web page listing as well, since nowhere on the product page is there a description for the actual PISTOL that this holster works with. I suppose I should have considered that an omen as to how this holster was going to work for me. In the end however, I continue to use this Cozy Partner with my Sig P229 while at the same time I continue to look for a better all-leather IWB solution that, relatively speaking, won't break the bank or won't require me to wait 6-9 months before it arrives (i.e., no Kramer, no Milt Sparks).
