Bauerfeind GenuTrain Knee Support (Titanium, 5) Review

I just wanted to throw this out here: I recently tweaked out my knee by pulling too hard on my own leg/foot while finishing a triangle (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu), and I decided to invest in a good knee brace to roll with for a while.

After a lot of reading reviews and googling, I decided to get a Bauerfiend. I chose this brand because:

1) Its widely prescribed by orthos
2) Their products have amazing reviews/testamonials all over the web.
3) Their products are hand made in Germany by people that apparently really really care about quality and attention to detail.
4) They last forever (one review was from a guy who finally replaced his 15 year old bauerfiend brace with the new model).

The brace was about $95. That is roughly twice what you expect to pay for most soft knee braces, but that is where every other similarity stops.

First of all, this brace is WOVEN. It has literally only ONE seam on it, which is a flat lock stitch that looks like it could never ever come undone. Literally...I don't know how they do it...the entire thing which is a composite of many kinds of elastic threads and fabric is woven together.

Because of its construction, it breathes VERY well....way way way better than anything made with neoprene.

It has two long inserts that run up both sides of the knee and they are woven into the brace along its entire length, these are used to easily pull the brace up into position without pulling on the elastic part of the brace and maybe stretching it too far.

The ring which keeps your kneecap in place and also supposedly massages your knee while you move is well placed, and due to the hourglass shape of the brace, it does NOT slide around like most other braces. In a 2.5 hour class that included 45 minutes of boxing, I only had to pull it back up once.

Also, they have reduced the fabric on the back of the knee, so that when you sit in someone's guard, its not cutting off the circulation to the rest of your leg, this is a deal breaker that most braces don't bother to factor into their design.

Sizing: What they ask you to do, is take two measurements (one above and one below the knee at specific distances) and then choose a size on their sizing chart based on that. My measurements fell right into the middle of the Size 4 bracket, and the fit on this brace is PERFECT. I recommend that if you get one of these, you take the time to accurately and carefully take these measurements.

This brace is amazing. I have had others in the past, both adjustable and non adjustable, and this is by far the best I have ever used. Also...it dries very very quickly after being washed, so its probably easy to keep it from getting funky.

Even though this brace is 2x-3x the cost of what you will get in your local sporting goods store, I think its about a 5x improvement over the typical soft brace and I cannot recommend it enough.
